A Little Autumn Pause, and I found myself asking "Why Do I Do What I Do?"

I’ve known for a long time that what I do is more than just taking pictures. As a full time professional photographer in our beautiful Reigate Hills, I create portraits that are more than just photos — portraits that truly mean something. Whether it’s multigenerational portraits at a family home in Surrey, capturing the story of a fabulous wedding or creating professional business photography for individuals and teams that helps them be more visible in a busy online world, my aim is always the same: to capture authenticity, connection, and moments that last. But I hadn’t ever put that into words before now. And it was an unexpected thought that came to me while I was enjoying a little space to think during half-term — I found myself asking, “Why do I actually do what I do?”

Half-term this year was a lovely two week mix of rest, laughter, and the usual juggling act: we were lucky to get away to the sun for a week before home to russet leaves, fresh walks and halloween fun. Being away can be a doubleedged sword for us freelancers; time to rest also means time not earning! Freelancing can be a rollercoaster. But the space also made me see, once again, how meaningful my work is. Watching my family interact, laugh, and make memories reminded me why I love creating portraits that capture real life, and why I put so much care into my work.

So I guess why is simple. I create portraits that really mean something to the people in front of my camera. For families, that means capturing moments that merge beautifully with memories — those everyday little things and big milestones that live on in a fine art frame on the wall, moments that bring a smile when everyone isn’t together. For business professionals and teams, it’s about confidence and connection — images that show your authentic self, help your brand connect with the right clients, and make you feel proud to share your professional presence online. And I don't think I could ever choose just one type of Client, no matter how often it is suggested that I could niche!

Taking a little time out reminded me that my work isn’t just about taking photos. It’s about creating a positive photographic experience. Every session is designed to feel relaxed, meaningful, and entirely focused on you. I want to capture the real essence of the people in front of my camera, so that every image is something to treasure, display, or use, but more importantly, remember.

The October break gave me space to think, reflect, and recharge. It reminded me to notice the small, joyful moments and that it is ok to love my work. And the answer to my Why is simple: I love creating beautiful portraits that help people feel confident, celebrate life, and capture memories that truly last. That’s what keeps me smiling behind the camera, every single session, every single click.

With love, Rachel xx
