Spring, inspiration and qualification!

The last few months have been very exciting here at Rachel Thornhill Photography… I’ve definitely found out why people say photography is a lifestyle job. Normal working hours are now so very far from normal, but I can honestly say I wouldn’t swop it for the world.

One of my highlights of March was The Photography Show at the NEC. As a photographer, once we have captured the images for our clients, quite a lot happens behind the scenes with editing and product creation, then there is the marketing and admin that goes along with running a business. So really, a photographer spends a lot of time behind a screen. Events such as the Photography Show are a chance for us to meet up with others in the industry, check out new kit and beautiful new products for our clients. We also get the chance to learn from today’s most inspiring photographers through talks and seminars, with the added bonus of seeing in person the beautiful photography that our industry is creating. Although it means time away from the business for a few days, I think events like this are absolutely crucial in helping us keep the passion, drive and freshness in our work. So believe me when I say that 2018 is going to be amazing!

I've also been putting the finishing touches on my Licenciate Qualfication for the British Institute of Professional Photography; not only do I need to show the best of my work in a printed portfolio, I also need complete a written submission, which is a cross between a business summary and a behind the scenes of the way I work. Getting this all down on paper and presented in the best way for the examiners is not as easy as it sounds! I have to admit I'm also a little nervous; qualification is not a requirement for photographers and is totally a personal choice, but I truly believe that going through the qualification process is not only going to make me a better photographer, but it will result in me being able to better serve you, my clients. So please keep your fingers crossed for me!

I’m going to be sharing more on a couple of the sessions I’ve been working on in the last couple of months very soon, including the results of my Mothers’ Day competition. Their beautiful artwork has been ordered, and I can’t wait to show you just what it is like to experience a Lifestyle Session with me, creating beautiful photography of your children to preserve just how they are right now to be enjoyed for years to come.

Anyway, what I’m most excited about this morning is the start of spring. Yes, I know that the easter holidays have been pretty soggy so far, but I know my boys have appreciated some downtime at home. We’ve also managed a weekend away at Alton Towers, and this week had amazing day at Fisher’s Farm in West Sussex.

But in the next few weeks, I'm sure this soggy weather is going to clear for glorious bluebells and blossom, and soon our gardens and countryside will be full of the beautiful flowers and plants of summer. I can't wait!

So here are a couple of my favourite images taken this time last year. We had a lovely morning with Dawn and her girls capturing images for a Father's Day present for her husband, and I couldn't resist but show you a couple of photographs of my own family exploring dens. These photographs are now beloved to the families of their subjects, so if you’d like to capture the magic of your family to treasure, message me now for my current availability.

With love,

Rachel x
